Speir Emerges as Day 1 Chip Leader; Liebert, Lindgren, Hachem, & Seidel All Still Alive

Kathy Liebert will forgo the Ladies Event as she returns for Day 2 tomorrow.
Kathy Liebert will forgo the Ladies Event as she returns for Day 2 tomorrow.

The anticipation surrounding Event No. 51, the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-low Split-8 or Better was at an all-time high among both pros and amateurs. Today, their excitement was unleashed as Day 1 of that event drew an impressive 946 players (99 more than 2010) creating a prize pool of $1,227,100. Each and everyone of them were looking to follow in the footsteps of Steve Jelenik, who last year bested a field of 847 to win $245,871.

This year, the winner will received even more than Jelenik as $268,235 has been set aside for first place. The man best positioned to make a run at the top prize is William Speir, who appears to be the Day 1 chip leader (115,300) with 134 players remaning.

Unfortunately not everyone was as lucky as Speir. Some of the players eliminated on Day 1 included Phil Laak, Tom "durrrr" Dwan, Daniel Negreanu, Eric Baldwin, Marcel Luske, Mike Matusow, Greg Raymer, Jonathan Duhamel, and Phil Hellmuth.

While many of poker's biggest names failed to survive, a few big names managed to sneak through to Day 2. Alexandre Gomes, Kathy Liebert, Alex Wice, Alexander Kostritsyn, Erick Lindgren, Erik Seidel, and Joe Hachem will all return tomorrow. Joining them will be big stacks David "Doc" Sands (94,000), Fabrizio Gonzalez (90,300), Tom Chambers (82,800), and Robert Campbell (74,100).

Day 2 is set to resume tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. PST, so be sure to join the PokerNews Live Reporting Team then as they bring you all the hands, chip counts, and eliminations from the tournament floor.

Three More Hands... Hurray!

The tourney clock has been stopped, a card was drawn (from five cards -- a 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7), and it has been determined three more hands will be played.

A cheer erupted from Tables 58 and 52 at the announcement, not because they wanted to play fewer hands, but because of numerous side bets hastily made just prior regarding what the number would be.

Liebert, Rowsome Among Final 150

With just 150 players left in the field, only two women remain among them.

Kathy Liebert has been steadily increasing her stack throughout the day and now sits with about 58,000. And Adrienne Rowsome has been holding steady at about 34,000.

We're all familiar with Liebert, of course, whose WSOP resume includes over $1 million worth of winnings, over 30 cashes, and a bracelet (2004, $1,500 Limit Hold'em Shootout).

Rowsome, meanwhile, has made her mark at the WSOP in Omaha/8 events over the last few years. She cashed in this same event last year (finishing 71st), her third WSOP cash overall. Her other two cashes also came in O/8 events -- the fixed limit variety.

Knockout For Wolfson

A player in late position potted preflop and made it 10,800 with only a few thousand more behind. Matt Wolfson thought about it then re-potted all in and got a call.

Wolfson: {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{2-Spades}
Opponent: {a-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

The board ran out {j-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} and Wolfson's twos full of jacks won him the pot and moved him up to 35,000. We are nearing the end of the day here and play has slowed down for the most part as people try and guarantee themselves a spot in Day 2.

Shocking Double for Schock

On a flop of {7-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{K-Spades}, Mitch Schock got all in holding {3-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades}{K-Hearts} and was called by his opponent's {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{K-Clubs}. The {6-Clubs} turn was gin for Schock as he made both a straight and a low. The {8-Diamonds} bricked on the river and Schock scooped the pot to double to 16,000.

Wolfson Wins a Few

With the board showing {7-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and 6,700 in the middle, an early position player checked and Matt Wolfson pushed out a bet of 3,700, sending his opponent into the tank. Finally, he let his hand go.

Wolfson sits with about 21,000 as we move into the final half-hour of play scheduled for tonight.

Small One for Volpe

A player under the gun called, and it folded around to Paul "paulgees81" Volpe in the small blind who called as well. The big blind checked his option, and the flop came {7-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{7-Hearts}. Volpe checked, the big blind bet 2,000, the third player folded, and Volpe called. Both then checked the {6-Spades} turn.

The river was the {4-Diamonds} and Volpe took a look to gauge his lone remaining opponent's stack size -- about 10,000. He then bet 3,200, and his opponent folded.

Volpe is at 19,000 at the moment.
