Ciao.

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month
October is Cyber Security Awareness Month

We work hard to keep you safe online all year long, but the good folks at the National Cyber Security Alliance have designated October as the month to raise awareness for this very worthy cause. We've asked our friend Michael from the NCSA to share with you a few tips — in addition to using OpenDNS — for protecting your cyber self. Take it away, Michael!

"Top Ways to Stay Safe Online," by Michael Kaiser, Executive Director, National Cyber Security Alliance

The Internet is supposed to make our lives better, and for most of us, that's exactly what it does. But the Internet has a dark side, and unless we take the proper precautions, this wonderful tool can end up causing us more harm than good. October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and it's a good time to take a hard look how our online behaviors may be putting us in harm's way. You don't have to be a computer genius to protect yourself online and you don't have to spend a lot of money. By following a few common sense tips, you can make the most out of your Internet experience, while protecting you and your family from online threats.

Protect your identity: On the Internet, your personal data (social security number, birth date, etc.) is extremely valuable and can be used against you. Keep it protected.

Protect your children: Children face unique risks on the Internet, and require unique rules and safeguards. Monitor your kids' online activities closely. There are many tools available to help you protect them from online threats.

Protect your accounts. Choosing hard-to-guess passwords and changing them regularly can help prevent criminals from getting at your money or personal information.

Thanks, Michael and NCSA! And if you're using OpenDNS, you're safe from phishing scams and have all the necessary tools at your fingertips to keep your family or business safe online!
Customer Spotlight: City of Nashville, Tennessee
Nashville, TN

At the cutting edge of technology, the City of Nashville, Tennessee, has selected OpenDNS to make the Internet safer, faster, smarter and more reliable for all citizens using the city-provided, free municipal Wi-Fi!

Because more than 600,000 Nashville-Davidson County residents and visitors have access to the free network at several wireless hotspots, Internet security is a main concern for the city government. In fact, providing improved data security and reliability with priority given to public safety is one of the strategic goals of the Information Technology Services of the Metro Nashville Government.

"OpenDNS provides the service that we need at no additional cost to our citizens," said Allan Que, Network Security Advisor at Metro Government of Nashville. "As a government entity, we continually strive to reduce costs and expect OpenDNS to save Nashville a significant amount on security efforts. And as phishing threats constantly evolve, community-supported phishing protection through OpenDNS-operated PhishTank shields our users from some of the latest attacks. Our experience with OpenDNS has been great. I would certainly recommend OpenDNS to other municipalities offering free Wi-Fi and looking to deploy Web filtering and phishing protections at a minimal cost."

OpenDNS — The Right Kind of Faster
OpenDNS cache

By Mike Damm, Senior Engineer

Editorial note: We're asked often how to tell if OpenDNS is faster than your ISP. Mike explains how OpenDNS outperforms.

OpenDNS is, in almost all cases, faster than your ISP's DNS servers. We consider it one of the many important reasons to use us, so we are working every day to make sure it is true.

But how can you tell that we are faster? An often-used method is the "ping test." One of the simplest measures of speed on a network, it sends a bit of data off to a server and waits for the remote end to give it the virtual OK that it was received successfully and measures the elapsed time, similar to the exchange of hellos at the beginning of a phone conversation.

If you run a ping test against your ISP's DNS servers and OpenDNS, you will often find that your ISP is able to respond with a "hello" quicker than we can. This is because your ISP is physically closer to you. Where OpenDNS begins to shine is when you get past the pleasant greetings and begin to ask: Do you happen to know how I would get to Yahoo.com? We keep the answers to all the most common questions in a giant cache, so we can get a relevant answer back to you faster. Your ISP's DNS server will probably do the same as when you call technical support: Can you please hold while I look that up?

So as you can see, OpenDNS is faster than your ISP but a ping test is not the best way to gauge speed. There are multiple factors that affect how long it takes a DNS response to be received. Though your ISP might be physically closer to you, OpenDNS gets you where you want to go — whether it's your email or Stuffonmycat.com — faster.
Customer Support Corner: Your Questions Answered

By Daniel Gifford, Community Manager

One of the most common issues we see in support is when a customer's content filtering stops working because their IP has changed. Many ISPs give home users a dynamic IP address, meaning that the lease on their IP will expire and the IP will change periodically. When this happens, and the network IP is not updated for the network in the OpenDNS account, preferences, including content filtering, will cease being applied to that user's network.

To address this, our developers have created a dynamic IP update client, which will let us know when and if the IP changes. The update client is a service that runs in the system tray of your computer, and sends updates to our servers whenever your IP address changes. This helps to ensure you will receive the same content filtering and preferences at all times, and do not run the risk of having an unsecured network.

The update client can be downloaded below and is easy to set up.

* OpenDNS Updater for Windows (2000/ME/XP and Vista)

* OpenDNS Updater for Mac (OS X 10.3 or newer)

You merely need to enter your OpenDNS username, password and network label (host name) when prompted during setup. The update client will do the rest, making sure your network is safe and secure at all times.

Note: Make sure "Enable Dynamic IP Updates" is configured on the Advanced Settings page in your OpenDNS account.
