NBC to Air Poker Reality Game Show 'Face the Ace', August 1

U.S. television network NBC plans to broadcast a new poker reality game show called "Face the Ace" beginning August 1. The show will combine elements of the entertainment found on a game show, the drama of a reality show, and the intense pressure of a player competing in a poker tournament with huge sums of money on the line.

The show will revolve around contestants (found via an online search) who are pitted in a showdown against pro poker players in Las Vegas in win or lose all matched. Fulltiltpoker.com will host qualifying tournaments with the top winners heading to Vegas for a chance to appear on the show.

The show begins with four pro poker players hidden behind smoked-glass doors. A contestant chooses one of those doors and then plays heads-up no-limit Hold'em against the pro revealed behind the door.

If the contestant wins their first match, they can opt to take the winnings and go home or risk those winnings and play against another pro for a bigger pot. If they win a second time, they can go home or play against a third pro for a chance at $1 million. But if they lose, the contestant goes home empty-handed.

"Face the Ace" will begin airing August 1st at 9pm, and is hosted by the Soprano's Steve Schirripa (Bobby Baccalieri). Poker Pros set to appear on the show include: Phil Ivey, Howard Lederer, Erik Seidel, Chris Ferguson, Phil Gordon, Erick Lindgren, Jennifer Harman and Gus Hansen.

After its premiere August 1, the show will appear again the following Saturday in the same 9pm time slot. After that, it's scheduled to run Saturday afternoons beginning in September. NBC has picked up seven episodes of Face the Ace so far, though that number can easily be expanded. If successful, the show could potentially continue on Saturdays in primetime, where networks continue to struggle to find low-cost original fare.

The show comes from Poker Pods, which also produces the hugely successful Poker After Dark series for NBC.
